Update^2: Someone, actually one of my maimiku, told me that such mobile mail address restriction applies only to IP address allocated to Japan. Hence no such restrictions to apply otherwise, it seems.
Update: For those who are getting an invitation, make sure you have a valid mobile mail account from one of those Japanese mobile carriers; notably, docomo, au, softbank, tsuka, willcom, etc. Now, mixi requires both your email account and your mobile mail account validated before they will issue a new mixi account. I know they are concerned about security; however, looking at the entire social media landscape from MySpace to facebook, which are getting open at least on the new member acquisition,
I think this move dismisses the potential of the Internet; that is, the potential being that location doesn’t matter and our hobby and interests (I have noted a lot of anime lovers overseas) distributed long tail across cultures around the globe. Mixi spread via word-of-mouth, viral, just like every other successful social media services. Did you know one of the fastest growing nations are China and India? Not Japan, whose population had just started to decline ahead of other advanced nations like Germany, Italy, US, or France. Now it in effect prevents folks overseas from signing up the new account. How sad.

The profile of the person who invites you..
Fill in your profile and apply. This screen shot is the old one. The new one requires your mobile phone mail address right after the PC (or mac) mail account. Both mail addresses will later be validated before activating the new mixi account. That almost means you need to be living in Japan and have a mobile phone with email enabled. Good luck.

LOOK! There’s really NO POINT in anyone asking to join Mixi by asking for an invitation!
The fact of the matter is, unless you can SPEAK, READ and WRITE Japanese (like me:>), then Mixi is not going to be of any use to you!
Even if you’re learning Japanese, you’re going to struggle on that site! Mixi is a Japanese site, and if you’re thinking you can switch to English once you’re there, you’re very much mistaken!
You can find plenty of Japanese friends that speak English on places like MySpace.com (simply click for Japan). Again, that’ll come up in Japanese, but if you know MySpace in English well enough, you’ll have little trouble finding your way around!
Other than that, Mixi is not for you if you don’t know any Japanese!

I hope it is not an issue to revive this, although the chances for us (requesters) will be slim, of course.
On the one hand, I’m also one of those who are interested about that social community networking site. The language barrier itself is not “that” big for myself, as I’m one of those who study Japan Studies (6th semester now, finishing in the next one). And even if you only have basic kanji knowledge, it is relatively easy to decipher what a page wants to say (they won’t use a lot of those extreme rare kanji, outside of the usual Jôyô ones you learn or those in special literature, though).
I would also like to request an invite, if anyone is already registered there and would be kind enough to give me (probably the users before me first) one.
And, yes, I know about that cell phone thing requirement, but I read something about users who actually _didn’t_ need to put in a valid cell phone number but somehow managed to register properly …
As for my mail address, I don’t want to post my (paid) primary one from my german ISP openly, as I advise you all here - at least replace the @ with something like [at], (@t) or something, but I can be contacted on my secondary address below at any time.
