Any thoughts on how/where the ID/pw info is stored and sent to the destination server? (and for that matter how the content is extracted from the destination server and returned to the user’s browser?)
I’ve been wary of using these AJAX homepage applications to aggregate content from pages which require login to third party services…
Interesting. I’ve never thought about it. But I’d let netvibes get access to my mixi account or gmail account and show the content in the my personalized page on netvibes. That’s fine with me. Also let the flickr go to my blogging tool account and upload the photo for me, like I did for this post. I’d prefer convenience over privacy, here; probably because my perceived risk of information leak is so low or I feel the content in my mixi or gmail is not that sensitive. But, I wouldn’t tell them my id and pw of my bank account. Maybe it might be prudent of netvibes if they’d tell about the potential risk at use, thought it might be hard for them to tell something that is not supposed to happen.
Obviously netvibes is targeting at the niche like me. But i think when the technology scales up that niche virtually at no cost across cultural boundaries over a larger usage bases and that niche becomes bigger, it pays off.
I personally would not have much of a problem allowing a trusted and reputable 3rd party to cache my webmail or Mixi ID/PW. I would count Netvibes itself as one such provider, if I actually felt a need to uses an AJAX homepage. (As a laptop user who carries his laptop everywhere, I feel no strong urge at the moment. I do have accounts on Google IG and Live.com, and I hardly ever feel the need to use them, ditto with Netvibes)
In this Netvibes Ecosystem with 3rd party developed tools, I am guessing that the same data flows through Netvibes and not through (or to) the 3rd party, but I would think users would like to have that stated explicitly somewhere. (I guess this applies in the more general case for content aggregators which cache ID/PW information)
Oh,to tell you the truth. It’s been a while since I last used the netvibes. I at most use google personalized page (it happends often just google page) as my front page, where I would like to see up-to-date news from main stream media and daily updated blogs like techcrunch, buzzmachine, paidcontent, giga om, micropersuasion, etc in one shot. 　I totally agree with you that it is not urgent.
